This £65m project connected the grade A* Royal Scottish Academy (RSA) and National Gallery of Scotland (NGS) buildings for the first time since their inception by the C19th Architect William Playfair. Constructed in two phases over five years, the RSA building was stripped bare and upgraded to 21st century curatorial standards, opening in 2004 with the blockbuster exhibition, ‘Monet, the Seine and the Sea’. The following year, the underground link building was opened, incorporating new vertical circulation to the RSA and NGS in addition to new visitor facilities and exhibition spaces – all within the UNESCO world heritage site.

Stuart Hill was the Project Associate Partner, responsible for coordinating the project through all design and construction stages.
