Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects (SHL), Aarhus, Denmark. (2005-2012). Head of London Office.

Stuart Hill was the first UK member of staff for the Danish Practice, working out of the main office in Aarhus as Project Director between 2005 and 2007 and subsequently Head of the London Office.

The Sir Duncan Rice Library was the first UK project for SHL, won in a selected competition in 2005. The University was attracted to the confidence of the proposal, which incorporates 1200 new student study spaces in an eight storey glazed ‘cube’, penetrated by a twisting atrium and located above a Caithness stone plinth containing the University’s unparalleled collection of early religious texts. The design and construction process of the £55.5m (construction cost) building took seven years, with a formal opening for the autumn term of 2012.

Stuart Hill was responsible for the coordination of this project from inception to completion – including liaison with all stakeholders, consultant design and construction teams alongside an international team of architects, based both in Aarhus and London.
