Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects (SHL), Aarhus, Denmark. (2005-2012). Head of London Office.
First UK member of staff for the Danish Practice, working out of the main office in Aarhus as Project Director between 2005 and 2007. Subsequently Head of the London Office.
The Sir Duncan Rice Library was the first UK project for SHL, won in a selected competition in 2005. The University was attracted to the confidence of the proposal, which incorporates 1200 new student study spaces in an eight storey glazed ‘cube’, penetrated by a twisting atrium and located above a Caithness stone plinth containing the University’s unparalleled collection of early religious texts. The design and construction process of the £55.5m building took seven years, with a formal opening for the autumn term of 2012.
